Afoa's Story
High Chief Afoafouvale Leulumoegafou Suʻesuʻe Lutu founded A.B.L.E. in 2004. A life long community leader and public servant, he sought to create a public entity that exemplified his motto: Leadership through Service. With A.B.L.E. he sought to empower our community - especially through education, health, and financial security.
In 2018, Afoa was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, progressive neurological disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions. It is incurable. Through this devastating news, A.B.L.E. crafted their Alzheimer's awareness efforts, with the hopes of decreasing the stigma around dementia in our community and helping to provide resources to patients and caretakers.
"My father spent all his life taking care of others, helping others and teaching all of us to care for our families and others of lesser means. Regardless of his financial obligations, he would give the last dollar in his pocket to anyone that approached him for help. It was this compassionate, kind and generous side of him that inspired him to found in 2004, the Agency for Better Living Endeavors (ABLE), to solidify his commitment to care for and support the people that he loves, his island community of American Samoa.
